Allen Bike Racks is a company started by Dick Allen in his Lincoln, Massachusetts home. It was actually born out of his own need for bike racks, as he and his family would often go out biking. Allen Bike Racks was sold through a number of major distributors and today it owns over three-dozen patents.
The Allen Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack is very safe choice when it comes to racks. It features:
- A simple, sturdy bike carrying system.
- A fit for most sedans, SUVs and minivans.
- Single configuration design which eliminates setup and installation difficulties.
- 12-inch long carry arms for 2 bikes.
- Patented individual tie down system.
- Lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship.
As you can see from the features listed above, this rack comes with enough features to keep your bikes safe. However, it isn’t necessarily the best when it comes to security. The rack doesn’t offer any straps or bolts for preventing swaying. It doesn’t have a security system to hold the wheels steady and keep them from colliding. Also, if you aren’t careful, the pedals of your bike may scratch your car. The tie down system does hold your bike securely to some extent, but you may need to use some extra bungee cords or straps.
This rack is a good choice, but not for long distance or rough roads. Don’t test its endurance with any extra load, because it definitely won’t be able to withstand the pressure.
If you use a bike rack only once in a while, that too only for transport within your city or town, this rack is a great choice. It is easy to install, so anyone can do it in a matter of seconds. It comes fully assembled, so you don’t have to put in any effort there. Its two carry arms are quite sturdy, but you should put your heavier bike on the slot closest to the car. That way, you do not put too much pressure on the rack.
The Allen Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack even comes at a great price and a lifetime warranty. You will definitely find better bike racks out there, but not for this price – you’ll really have to search a lot.
In a nutshell, this is a great bike rack, but not for heavy duty use. It’s good enough for using once in a while, maybe to pick up the children’s bikes and drop them off to some place. If you plan on using the rack a lot, over long distance and rough routes, it’s better that you opt for a sturdier rack than this.
While the security system isn’t the best and the aesthetics aren’t too good either – the foam supports are grey, the top and bottom struts are unpainted silver aluminum and the caps at the end of the rack are white- the rack can definitely deliver. Thus, it’s a great bike if it suits your requirements.
